A great choral creation, a dramatic composition by Marco Martinelli devised and directed together with Ermanna Montanari and coproduced with ERT Fondazione: the ‘hope’ of the Risorgimento embedded in Giuseppe Verdi’s music as counterpoint to the ‘quagmire’ and corruption of Italy today. The story is set in a small town in Emilia-Romagna at the beginning of the century where a courageous municipal policeman refuses to obey the powers that be and loses his job rather than lose his integrity: the intrigues of mafia, politics and ‘willing’ business interests are poisoning the social fabric of a region that saw the birth of socialism and the first cooperatives.
